Best adult retelling of The Little Mermaid I've ever read. Extremely well written in a very mature style that still retains the element of macabre fairytale, that surrounds the original story.
This book was beautiful. It was such a refreshing read, and such an incredibly written book. "Drown" is the author's, Esther Dalseno's, first novel and I am incredible impressed by her work.
Beautifully dark, heartbreaking tale that remains true to the tragic Hans Christian Anderson original. I'm very much looking forward to reading more of Ms. Dalseno's work.
“…beautiful and dark, definitely not your Disney version! It’s more true to the original version—with some intriguing twists…The author’s great imagination really added an entrancing flair to the novel. An exploration of love, betrayal, the soul, heartache and loss, the joys of life, and what makes one human.”
So beautifully crafted is this story, it's impossible not to feel how much Dalseno loves the original story, and so as I was reading, I felt Dalseno understood me. "She gets it!" I would think, and would feel such a rush of affection for the author who not only shared my love for this story, but also used that love to write such an achingly gorgeous retelling.
“The depth Dalseno weaves into her characters and her melancholy, dreamlike prose pair beautifully with Hans Christian Andersen’s original tragic fairy tale. DROWN is darkly romantic, lush, and broke my heart in all the best ways. It’s everything a good retelling should be.”
"DROWN is the perfect rendition of everything I didn’t expect it to be, with everything I hoped it would be... Esther Dalseno completely transforms the story into something both hauntingly beautiful and mesmerizing...DROWN is unlike anything I have ever read."
I can easily say that "Drown" will be on the list of my all time favorite books.
It’s a cliche to say you couldn’t put a book down but this statement applies here. With such little time to read, I found myself picking up this book whenever I could.
"...a book that keeps you up all night because you cannot, dare not, put it down...I expected great things from this book and got out-of-this-world amazing things instead...I need Esther Dalseno to retell all the fairy tales."
"Ms. Dalseno's tale did not disappoint. In fact, it delighted me, if you can say that about a story that left me brokenhearted... Its lyricism was dazzling and the story itself was gorgeous..."
Dalseno fills out the [Little Mermaid] story while managing to make it feel like a creation of her own. She makes many brilliant, intriguing changes, but if you’re expecting Disney, this isn’t it.
"The best Little Mermaid retelling of the century...I picked it up and from the first page I fell in love. The plot, the characters, the on the edge moments and oh Lord, the cover! Everything about this book has changed my opinions on Mermaid YA. It was incredible and I highly recommend it. Hans Christian Andersen would be very proud..."
"Have you ever wanted to know what really lies below the surface of the waters and the mermaids origins, why the Sea Witch seemed so much more than ever written, and the littlest mermaid's true desire to be human beyond her initial feelings for the prince? DROWN feels like an unexplored fairy tale that has come to light."
